How to Install Aftermarket Head Units on a Ford

    • 1). Raise the Ford's hood by pulling the hood release lever located under the dashboard on the driver's side. Move to the front of the vehicle and loosen the bolt holding the negative battery cable clamp to the negative battery terminal with the wrench. Lift the cable from the battery and set it aside. Return to the vehicle's passenger cabin.

    • 2). Slide the two Ford DIN removal tools into the holes on either side of the stereo's face. Push the DIN keys into the openings until they lock into place. Pull outward on the keys while pulling the factory stereo from the vehicle's dashboard stereo dock.

    • 3). Disconnect the stereo wiring plugged into the outlets on the back of the stock stereo. Disconnect the FM antenna cable lead plugged into the antenna input on the back of the stock unit.

    • 4). Insert the Ford aftermarket faceplate adapter into the stereo dock while feeding the stereo wiring and antenna cables through the back of the adapter. Plug the white plastic stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads.

    • 5). Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the outlets on the rear panel of the new aftermarket head unit. Plug the antenna cable lead into the antenna input on the back of the new unit.

    • 6). Slide the new head unit into the opening in the dashboard provided by the faceplate adapter. Push the stereo into the dash until it locks into place within the stereo mounting dock. Return to the Ford's engine compartment.

    • 7). Place the battery cable clamp back onto the negative battery terminal and tighten the cable's bolt with the wrench. Close the hood.
