How to Choose a Nursing a Career

    • 1). Learn about the different positions within nursing. A career in the nursing field is not limited only to registered nurses. Positions as licensed practical nurses, certified nurse aides, nurse anesthetists and even medication aides are widely available. It is important that you learn about the different positions available before choosing which one to pursue as a nursing career.

    • 2). Find out where you can work in nursing. Although hospitals employ more than half of all registered nurses, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, many other places of employment are available for people interested in a nursing career, such as nursing homes, assisted living centers, home health care agencies, private physician practices and even public health departments.

    • 3). Research the salaries for different nursing positions. Entry-level nursing jobs earn less than those that require specialized education and skills. Find out what the average wages for different nursing careers are by reviewing the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    • 4). Determine what education level is required. A certified nurse aide position is considered entry-level as it can be easily obtained after completing a short course. To become a registered nurse, however, you must complete two to four years of education. Knowing how long you will have to be in college as well as the courses you are required to take can help you decide which nursing career is right for you.

    • 5). Shadow a nurse for a day. Find out what a typical day is like for her, and ask any questions you might have about the field. Arrange this visit through a career counselor at a high school or college, or contact the administrators of the medical facility you are interested in visiting about whether they allow employees to be shadowed.
