Acquaint your dog with the most basic commands: sit, stay, lay, heel.
Before you start, don't forget to be patient, Golden Retrievers are intelligent dogs.
Don't feel frustrated when your dog doesn't get it right at first.

Reserve a selection of tasty treats.
Give your dog one treat for every right move he makes.

Start with the command "sit"- Stand your Golden Retriever in front of you while you hold the treat firmly in your hand.
Move it towards your shoulder.

Walk away and give the heel command.

As you get better at this, increase the length of your leash until its too long and loose.
As you both walk, introduce other commands like sit and lie.

Get him in the sit or lie position and firmly tell him to stay.
Now, take a few steps away from him but don't turn your back- remain facing him.
Count 1 to 3 then return and praise your dog.
Don't expect your dog to remain still at first.
His acquaintance with the command will gradually develop.
This command needs the most practice.
As you keep on training your Golden, he'll eventually associate it with praise and reward and soon, you will be able to untie him and turn your back while he stays.
