- 1). Get quotes from insurance companies and look for features. For instance, some insurance companies offer a fixed number of free roadside assistance calls per year, and may also include towing to a repair shop or home.
- 2). Check the compensation rates for accidents, then compare them to see if they are higher than your state's minimum liability requirements. For example, in California, the minimum liability coverage is $15,000 for injury/death to one person, $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person and $5,000 for damage to property. Ideally, you would want your insurance liability to be higher than these minimums.
- 3). Ask the companies if they offer umbrella insurance plans. If you rent or own a home or have a boat, you may ask the companies if they insure those items, too.. Umbrella plans usually cost less than insuring things separately.
- 4). Determine whether your insurance company provides a rental car if your car is wrecked.
