- 1). Look at the tag on the couch cover, if it is still attached, and identify the type of fabric it is made from. Is your couch cover made of microfiber, cotton, linen or nylon? Determining the type of fabric is a key factor in getting stains out.
- 2). Remove the couch cover from the couch and spread it on a large surface, such as a table or laminate floor. If your cover is made of microfiber, linen or cotton, spray a spot remover treatment on any stains and rub the spots gently with a clean toothbrush. Take paper towels and blot the spots. Repeat until the stain has lightened or disappeared. If the cover is made of nylon, use a mixture of OxiClean and water to treat the spots. Blot the spots with paper towels and repeat as you would for a cotton, linen or microfiber cover.
- 3). Put your cover in the washing machine. Turn on the gentle cycle and use cold water. Cold water will retain color dye in the fabric and remove the remaining stains and odors. Pour in a detergent designed for delicate fabrics, such as Woolite or Dreft brands.
- 4). Put the cover into the clothes dryer on a low heat setting if it is made of cotton or linen. If your cover is made of microfiber or nylon, let it air dry; a dryer can damage these fabrics fairly easily. Once the cover is dry, return it to the couch. Finish with a spritz of fabric refresher, such as Febreze or Glade fabric sprays.
