How to Cancel a Home Phone but Forward the Number

    • 1). Establish service with a new carrier. This step may be completed by calling a new service provider or by visiting a provider's store location. Many companies allow you to begin new service using an existing number on their websites as well.

    • 2). Advise your new provider that you will be porting in a home phone number. Your new provider may assign a temporary number to your account or put through a port request while they are creating your account.

    • 3). Give your new provider all of the information they need to complete the port. Necessary information generally includes your home phone number, home phone service account number, your Social Security number, any account passwords on your home provider account and your billing address.

    • 4). Wait for the port to complete. A landline-to-mobile port can take seven to ten business days to complete. Test the number to make sure it is connected to your new phone.

    • 5). Contact your original home phone service provider once the port is complete. Cancel your original service if necessary.
